CHAPTER ELEVEN
Lexie kicked Beauty faster, the wind biting into her face. Why had she sent Misty home? She knew how to handle and communicate with her. Sure, Beauty was usually a gentle ride, but the sudden change in movement left her unsettled and her hooves pummeled over the ground in wild abandon. The last thing Lexie needed was to fall from the horse. Actually, the last thing she needed was for the man watching them to come after them.
She glanced over her shoulder. No one was chasing them. Had they gone far enough so if this guy fired a gun that a bullet wouldnât reach them? She wasnât familiar with weapons, so she had no idea. Which meant keeping Beauty racing fast.
At the house, Gavin dropped from Lightning before fully stopping. He looped the horseâs reins on a rough wooden fence and then jerked Lexie from Beautyâs back. Her feet had barely hit the ground when he grabbed her hand and flew toward the steps, pulling her behind him. She tripped on the bottom stair, so he scooped her into his arms and kept moving in one seamless motion.
Terrified or not, the awareness of being in his arms cut through her feelings. He pushed open the door and she wished heâd set her free as much as she wished heâd keep holding her. She longed to be held by him again and the reality was even better than her memories.
He looked deeply into her eyes. âAre you okay?â
âFine,â she replied, though her heart beat as fast as Beautyâs hooves had struck the ground.
Gavin scooped her closer. Held her tighter. She circled her arms around his neck. Wanting to kiss him, she lifted her face.
âWhatâs wrong, Lex?â Adam called out from the dining room. He was a teenager, but they were so close that he had the ability to sense her distress.
âDonât worry, bud. Iâm fine.â She dropped her arms and tried to squirm free.
Gavin held fast and carried her into the family room, where his parents and grandparents were watching television. He gently set her on her feet. She heard Adam follow them into the room.
âThere was a man watching us from the overlook,â Gavin said. âIâm leaving Lexie here and going after him.â
Walt jumped up from his chair. Winnieâs eyes narrowed and Betty sat forward.
âThen letâs get after him,â Walt said.
âNot so fast.â Gavin held out a hand. âIâve got this. You stay here with Lexie.â
His father eyed him. âItâs my county, and if anyone does the staying, itâll be you.â
Gavin seemed to weigh his decision and finally looked at his grandfather. âYou good to watch over Lexie, Granddad?â
âCourse I am.â Jed came to his feet. âBut donât be in such an all-fire hurry that you forget defensive tactics.â
âBe careful,â Winnie called out, but they were out the door in a flash and Lexie didnât know if theyâd even heard her.
Lexieâs fear started to abate and her legs felt like rubber. She nearly collapsed but Jed grabbed her elbow.
